Since 2017 German photographer Toby Binder has been quietly, patiently documenting the daily realities of young people in working class neighborhoods of Belfast. His long-term project, Youth of Belfast, is the result of years spent earning the trust in these communities
Through Binder’s images, we see a generation growing up in a city still marked by the deep divisions and lingering echoes of the troubles. Though peace was declared over a quarter-century ago, its aftermath enduresmetch ed into the walls and delineated by invisible boundaries that continually divide many of Belfast’s streets. Against this backdrop, young people face a modern yet timeless set of struggles: unemployment, addiction and violence. What is revealed is the bonds of community, the resilience of youth, and the small acts of loyalty and friendship that persist.
Binder’s photographs offer an unflinching, deeply human portrait. His commitment to returning over time allows us to see beyond a single moment of hardship or hope, and to understand the slow, complicated rhythm of life in these neighborhoods.
Youth of Belfast is both a document and a dialogue, between a photographer and a community, between past and present, and between the fragile promise of youth and the weight of inherited history.
About Toby Binder
Toby Binder is a documentary photographer whose work focuses on social, political, and humanitarian issues in conflict and post-crisis regions. He is drawn to stories that reveal overlooked aspects of our world, from children accused of witchcraft in Nigeria to legalized child labor in Bolivia and miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Much of his work centers on the experiences of young people, reflecting his belief that society is failing to build a better world for the next generation.
His photography has received international recognition, including awards from LensCulture, Gomma Grant, Life Framer, the Felix Schoeller Award, the Philip Jones Griffiths Award, the Sony World Photography Awards, and Germany’s Nannen-Preis. He has also received an Honorable Mention from UNICEF Photo of the Year. Binder’s work has been featured in Stern, Zeit Magazin, The Guardian, Le Monde, The Washington Post, Greenpeace Magazin, Amnesty Journal, and Neue Zürcher Zeitung, among others.
